CHAPTER 8:

Julie had been a little startled at the sight of Olivia. She had not expected her to be there for some reason, which she knew was totally stupid given that The Bennett Falls was not that large and people were bound to run into each other sooner or later.

The woman seated in the booth across from Julie asked, “I can’t believe you were stuck on some deserted island and couldn’t even call.”

Julie’s finger shredded the paper that she had pulled off of her straw. “I was. I told you I was going out there and I really did mean to get back yesterday but…well those assholes ran over my boat and the storm and…I’m sorry, really I am.”

She knew that she should be paying far more attention to the conversation but her eyes kept wandering toward the other side of the restaurant, which was not even visible from where she sat in the booth by the window near the back door. Olivia had looked so tired and so alone and Julie’s heart had gone out to her at that moment.

Julie lifted her eyes from her drink to see Deidre Cartwright leaning back against the booth. Deidre’s eyes, a pretty and faded blue, did not drop when Julie met her stare. That was the one thing she had always admired about Deidre. No matter what she would look someone right in the eye.

Deidre’s fingers, neatly manicured and painted a glossy scarlet color, tapped out a rather dramatic drum roll on the table top. That was a clear indicator of just how irritated Deidre was just then and Julie’s muscles went taut.

She squirmed slightly in the chair. This was not something she had wanted to do that night. Meeting with Deidre had been the last thing she had wanted to do in fact.

Her day had started with rowing across a lake in a busted kayak and then going back across it in a whopper of a rainstorm and then dealing with her business. She was tired and out of sorts. She still had not yet made it home to shower and she was itchy and uncomfortable and exhausted.

Deidre had insisted however so here they sat in the restaurant.

Deidre lifted a shoulder under the cream silk blouse that she wore. “I just need a few hours of your time Julie. I mean so we can get this whole mess sorted out.”

It was a mess. It was a mess as she was seriously wondering if she had been a fool to get herself into in the first place. Julie’s hands went to her hair and she yanked at the messy knot rather viciously. “Okay. I can do that. I just can’t do it tonight. I’m more tired than I’ve ever been in my life and I can’t even think right now much less talk this out with you.”

Deidre’s neatly shod toes tapped at the floor below the table. Julie could hear the little rat – tat – tat sound coming from below there and her teeth clenched again.
